Nachvak Fjord

Today I had an Agassiz trawl in Nachvak Fjord and some students joined me from School on Board. Tanya Brown is working with me collecting species, she’s really used to all the species found along the Labrador coast. The species collected in the fjords will go to the CHONe project for genetic identification. The students had a good time looking at critters and playing in the mud. Well I had too. :) And we're entering in the Fjords so it's very beautiful...

We had our Sunday dinner and this one was special: I was invited at the captain’s table with 7 other people. Two were from Nain, a small inuit community on the Northern Labrador coast. One is a fisherman, Joey, and the other is a student from School on Board, Caitlyn. There will be a cultural component on board with the presence of three inuit from Nain. It’s great! I was interested to learn about that component of the Arctic as well.

Dimanche le 8 novembre

Aujourd’hui, j’ai fait un chalut Agassiz dans le Fjord Nachvak pour obtenir des espèces pour le projet CHONe. Tanya Brown travaille aussi pour collecter des espèces et elle est bien habituée aux espèces qu’on retrouve le long de la côte du Labrador. Les étudiants m’ont rejoint pour le chalut et aussi au labo, on s’est bien amusés à trouver les espèces dans la boue. De plus, le paysage est superbe, on entre completement dans les fjords...

C’était le fameux souper du dimanche et cette fois-ci j’ai été invitée à me joindre à la table du capitaine avec 7 autres personnes. De celles-ci, 2 venaient de Nain, une communauté Inuit de la côte du Labrador d’environ 500 personnes. Joey est pêcheur et Caitlyn est une étudiante à bord. Il y aura un certain composant culturel à bord grâce à la présence de 3 inuits de Nain, ce qui est vraiment intéressant. J’avais envie d’en apprendre plus sur ce composant important de l’Arctique qu’on a pu toucher jusqu’à présent.
